Reggae Star Ziggy Marley Rejects Calls to Boycott Israel

“Rastafarianism has a lot to do with the Old Testament and Solomon and David and Moses, so we have a strong connection from many years back,” singer says.

Online pressure to boycott Israel didn’t dissuade reggae star Ziggy Marley from performing in Tel Aviv Tuesday night or on Thursday at the Return to Zion festival at Sacher Park in Jerusalem.

“People say, don’t disgrace your father’s name by going to Israel and all these type of things,” the eldest son of the late musical icon Bob Marley said at a press conferenceTuesday at the Sheraton Hotel in Tel Aviv, referring to the negative responses he saw on Facebook and other sites upon publication of his Israel tour dates.

“What I tell them is that, listen, I follow nature, I follow the universe, I follow God. I’m not a part of the segregation that people put on each other … I’m a part of nature and God, and God made the sun shine for everybody.”

This isn’t Marley’s first visit to Israel, both as a performer and visitor. His wife is Israeli and he said his young children speak Hebrew. And there are other ties to the land for Marley, who said his culture of Rastafarianism is rooted in concepts developed in “this region of the world.”

“Rastafarianism has a lot to do with the Old Testament and Solomon and David and Moses, so we have a strong connection from many years back,” he said.

Marley, who recently released his latest album, Wild and Free, said the message he is trying to convey is one of love and spirituality.

But at the press conference he didn’t shy away from questions of a political nature. Marley weighed in on the Knesset’s recent passing of the antiboycott law, which allows civilians to file lawsuits against organizations or people who impose boycotts on Israeli economic, academic or commercial institutions.

“I think the people should have a right to boycott whoever they want to boycott without the government making them into criminals, and try to protect corporations from people,” he said. “They should protect people from corporations.”

A strong advocate of the widespread use of marijuana, Marley also chastized corporations and politicians for criminalizing and demonizing the plant. He said hemp seeds have nutritional and environmental benefits, and can be used in a wide variety of sustainable practices.

But the tour this time around is mostly about music, and Marley said he is still happy to be known as the son of Bob Marley.

“People love me everywhere I go,” Marley said to laughter.

Becoming serious, he said his father is one of his favorite musicians.

“He was just a great artist and that is one of my biggest inspirations.” But he said he doesn’t expect his children to follow in his or his father’s footsteps, adding that he hopes his children do whatever they feel “inside of them.”

Asked whether he or his family practices Judaism at home, Marley replied: “I practice love.”

Rutgers U. Versus U. C. Irvine- A Contrast in Combating Campus Anti-Israel Hate

Rutgers - the New Jersey State University - has been a battleground between virulently anti-Israel and pro-Israel advocacy for nearly a decade. Back in 2003, you had avowed Communist and Rutgers Law Student Charlotte Kates who became a fixture in the National Students International and Palestinian Solidarity Movements who spoke of  “suicide bombers as a tool of justice, and against the right of Israel to exist as a sovereign state.” Then there was the clownish Rutgers senior, Abe Greenhouse who threw a cream pie in the face of Israeli human rights icon, Natan Sharansky, at a campus talk in 2003 before an audience of 500. Israeli security guards wrestled Greenhouse to the ground giving him a broken nose and bloddy lip for his efforts. Greenhouse had the chutzpah to put a note in the Kotel or Western Wall in Jerusalem saying: "end the mother f-----g occupation.” Greenhouse wasconvicted in a New Jersey court of a disorderly persons offense and fined a paltry $200 for the Sharansky pie throwing incident three years later in 2006.

More recently in January, 2011, another Rutgers anti-Israel hate fest sponsored by a group called BAKA: “Students United for Middle Eastern Justice” tried to paint Israel as the new Nazi, what Yaakov Kirschen in our NER interview: “Secret Codes Hidden War” called an example of Moral Inversion.

Note what Rutgers Senior Eric Kaplan noted this in an Op-Ed, “Fight anti-Semitic thought, speech” about the BAKA hate fest in  the student newspaper The Targum;

Anti-Semitism is also present at the University. An upcoming event entitled "Never Again" promotes anti-Semitic attitudes under the guise of being anti-Israel. Criticism of Israel that is comparable to that leveled against other countries should be welcome. According the U.S. Department of State in a report addressing the rise of anti-Semitism to Congress, comparing the behavior of Israel to the Nazis is anti-Semitic, since it has no connection to reality.

I am not surprised this event is being sponsored by BAKA: Students United for Middle Eastern Justice, which has consistently lodged unfair criticism against Israel. Now, we can be sure that BAKA is indeed anti-Semitic and has no place in our civil discourse.

Here is what WorldNetDaily reported about the event, “Rutgers bars Jews from Anti-Zionist Event”:

Rutgers University campus police tonight (1/29) barred some 400 Jewish students and their supporters, including some Holocaust survivors, from attending what was billed as an anti-Zionist gathering at the state school tonight.

The student-sponsored event was announced with an open invitation campus-wide, and Rutgers policy is for all student activities to be open to the public.

However, when the sponsoring organizations of “Never Again for Anyone” saw they were outnumbered by Jewish students and their supporters by about 4-to-1, they asked campus policy to bar students wearing yamulkas – and eventually limited attendance to known supporters of the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network, Americans for Muslims in Palestine and the Middle East Children’s Alliance.

Pleas to university officials from the Jewish students and their supporters for access to the event went unheeded. ”They started charging money as soon as they saw Zionists outside,” said Rabbi Akiva Weiss.

Rutgers campus police said they could not provide a statement as to why the public event would turn away 400 members of the public. One officer said they were called in late and weren’t really sure what was going on. When the Jewish students, led by Aaron Marcus, were denied entry, they gathered in the lobby and sang religious songs in Hebrew.

“We wanted to protest this event because as the children and grandchildren of victims of the Holocaust we believed it to be absolutely absurd to compare Israeli act of self defense to the vicious, systematic murder of millions of Jews, Catholics, Gays, Gypsies, Russians and others,” Marcus said.

Members of the New Jersey branch of Young Americans for Freedom were in attendance to protest the discrimination against Jewish students.

Fast forward to early June, 2010, when a event honoring Rutgers Hillel Students fighting Campus hatred was held in Livingston, New Jersey. Note this comments from a New Jersey Jewish Standard article about the event.

Rutgers University has found itself on the front lines of international anti-Israel efforts, as well as some visiting programs that can only be described as anti-Jewish,  I was very proud of the Hillel student leadership and how they rose to the occasion to delegitimize the delegitimizers.

The contrast with the U.C. Irvine experience, that we have written about in the July NER  “Does the Olive Tree initiative Lack Credibility?” is fairly dramatic. In the Rutgers case, the Hillel chapter joined forces with the local New Jersey Jewish community to combat hate on campus spewed by pro-Palestinian groups. By contrast in the U.C. Irvine case, both Hillel student leaders and the local Jewish Federation and Family Services, Inc (JFOC). have denied campus anti-Semitism, funded programs resulting in converting students to the Palestinian cause that facilitated meetings with Hamas and International Solidarity Movement leaders both on the West Bank and on campus. To make matters worse, both U.C.  Irvine Hillel and JFOC leaders have resorted to slandering Jewish community activists for organizing events highlighting campus Antisemitism.

Gary Fouse, a U.C. Irvine adjunct instructor, in a recent post, “Rutgers – The Case for Community Involvement Against Anti-Semitism” on his blog, Fousesqwak notes the differences:

What the case of Rutgers illustrates is that there is an important role for the community-not just Jewish-but all good-minded people to answer the call. Is there a lesson for other schools? You bet there is.

In the case of my school (UC-Irvine), Hillel has responded by supporting positive events like I-Fest. In my view, however, that is not enough. Whether or not Jewish (or other) students want to actively challenge the organizations like the Muslim Student Association or Students for Justice in Palestine is a personal matter, and only the individual student can make that decision. The fact is that in most campus communities, there is a void left when it comes to challenging the above groups, their speakers and their often hateful messages.

That is where the community comes in. The case of Rutgers, as well as UCI in the past couple of years illustrates that community involvement can be effective. For one thing, lax university administrators who are afraid to speak out and condemn anti-Semitic hate speech (as opposed to hate speech directed at certain other groups) have to have their feet held to the fire and told that ALL hate speech is unacceptable-even if constitutionally protected free speech. Over the years at UCI many hateful statements have been made against Jews. Swastikas have been scrawled on bathroom stalls at other UC campuses like Berkeley.

It was only in 2010, when Amir Abdel Malik Ali told Jews in his audience that he supported Hamas, Hizbollah and Islamic Jihad and that "You Jews-You'all the new Nazis" that UCI chancellor Drake finally spoke out and condemned it-without mentioning the speaker, the quote, the event and the targeted group.

Even worse, Orange County community members who decided after the incident with the Israeli ambassador to the US in February 2010 that enough was enough and started to organize counter-protests on the UCI campus, were met by opposition from the local Hillel chapter and the OC Jewish Federation. If some students prefer to dialogue with their Muslim counterparts, that is their business. If others (students or community members) choose to actively challenge hateful speakers in a legal and non-disruptive manner, that is our business.

Peru Election: Victory For Left-Wing Nationalist Adds To Fears Of 'Anti-US Cabal'

A left-wing nationalist has been elected president of Peru, increasing fears in the United States about a growing "anti-US cabal" in South America.

Ollanta Humala, 48, a former lieutenant colonel in the army, narrowly won an election run-off against Keiko Fujimori,the daughter of disgraced ex-President Alberto Fujimori.

Mr Humala secured victory after attempting to distance himself from his previous image as a hardline, radical leftist in the mould of Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez.

But analysts in the US still believe the result is likely to heighten tensions between President Barack Obama's administration and Latin America.

Frank Gaffney, founder and president of the Washington-based Centre for Security Policy think-tank, said he feared Peru would now join Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador as another South American country hostile to the US.

"I think there is increasingly less and less upside to being associated with the US and that augurs very ill for American security and trade," he said.

"Chavez is clearly actively fostering an anti-US cabal in the region. I think it is a very dark day for US-Peruvian relations and indeed for the hemisphere."

Erasto Almeida, a Latin America analyst at Eurasia Group in New York, agreed that the new Peruvian government would be more likely to "have strong views about the US as an imperial power" than the previous one.

"I think relations with the US will be a little less constructive than they have been," he said. "But I don't see Humala taking an aggressive approach. I don't see Peru going down the path of Venezuela."

Mr Humala ran for the presidency in 2006 - presenting himself as a close ally of Mr Chavez and a fan of General Juan Velasco, the left-wing dictator who ruled Peru from 1968 to 1975 - but was defeated by Alan Garcia.

This year he moderated his stance and pledged to follow the market-friendly model of tackling poverty pursued by Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the former president of Brazil.

Mr Humala used the fact that his opponent's father is serving a 25-year prison sentence for employing death squads against left-wing opponents and corruption to his advantage, amid fears that Ms Fujimori would grant him a pardon if elected.

In his victory speech in Lima, the capital, Mr Humala promised to create jobs, build homes, and deliver running water and electricity to neglected areas.

"We've been waiting a long time for a government that really cares about the poor," he said. "This has got to change, and it's for this change that I am here. I'm only interested in achieving what I've offered the Peruvian people."

But Peru's stock market sank nearly 9 per cent after opening on Monday amid concern about a windfall tax Mr Humala wants to impose on mining profits and the possibility of more interventionist economic policies.

Mr Humala had 51.2 per cent of the official vote with nearly 90 per cent of votes counted and most of those still to be announced located in rural areas where he commands higher support.

Cable: Jamaica Could Become Incubator For Terror

KINGSTON, Jamaica -- A leaked U.S. diplomatic cable says Jamaica could potentially become an incubator for Islamic extremism, especially with the return of a Muslim cleric convicted of whipping up racial hatred in Britain.

The February 2010 dispatch expresses concern about a deportee from Britain known as Sheikh Abdullah el-Faisal (Pictured), noting that several Jamaican-born men have been involved in acts of terrorism over the last decade.

It says el-Faisal's return to Jamaica in January 2010 "raises serious concerns regarding the propensity for Islamist extremism in the Caribbean at the hands of Jamaican born nationals."

U.S. officials had no immediate comment Friday. Attempts to interview el-Faisal have been repeatedly rebuffed.

Farrakhan: Libya Has Lent Nation of Islam Millions

CHICAGO –  Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan reiterated his defense of Moammar Gadhafi on Thursday, calling the embattled Libyan leader a friend and Muslim brother who's lent the movement $8 million over the years.

Farrakhan, speaking at a rare news conference, railed against the media and said Gadhafi isn't the monster being portrayed by Western governments.

The 78-year-old minister criticized the U.S. government and President Barack Obama — whom he also called a brother — for launching military action against Libya without justification. He accused Americans of just wanting Gadhafi out of the picture to secure oil interests.

"I love Moammar Gadhafi, and I love our president," Farrakhan told several hundred cheering supporters at the Nation of Islam's headquarters. "It grieves me to see my brother president set a policy that would remove this man not only from power, but from the earth."

Obama has defended America's military involvement in Libya, saying the U.S. has intervened to prevent a slaughter of civilians. He has ruled out targeting Gadhafi militarily, and the U.S. turned over control of the military operation to NATO on Thursday. Gadhafi, who has ruled Libya for decades, has been battling opposition forces.

Farrakhan portrayed Gadhafi as a fellow revolutionary and longtime friend to the Nation of Islam, which used $3 million it borrowed from Libya in the 1970s to acquire its opulent headquarters on Chicago's South Side. Years later, a $5 million loan was used to pay back taxes and costs for the home of the movement's former leader Elijah Muhammad.

Farrakhan has publicly defended Gadhafi at several recent events, including the Nation of Islam's annual Saviours' Day convention in February and at a civil rights convention last week. He said the U.S. government shouldn't be attacking Libya when it has stayed out of other conflicts around the world.

He called for a cease-fire on both sides in Libya and a chance for the Libyan people to vote on whether Gadhafi should stay in power. He dismissed allegations that Gadhafi has violently cracked down on his own people, saying the Libyan leader was "killing traitors."

"Do you really think that Brother Gadhafi really was going to slaughter 700,000 people?" Farrakhan said. "If that were true ... where are all the bodies?"

"I don't care what Gadhafi has done wrong, he is not the 'mad dog of the Middle East,'" he said, a reference to the label former President Ronald Reagan once gave Gadhafi.

B.I.G. - BUY ISRAELI GOODS - Day on Wednesday March 30, 2011

On March 30, StandWithUs and the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce are calling for a BIG - Buy Israeli Goods - Day. Responding to a global anti-Israeli boycott on the same date where protestors will stand outside stores asking shoppers not to buy Israeli products, the BIG Day effort urges schools, campuses, synagogues, community organizations, and individuals to counter the boycott and celebrate Israel by designating March 30 as a day to purchase Israeli goods at local stores. 

 

Linda Slucker, NCJW's President, and Nancy K. Kaufman, NCJW's CEO, have asked us to show our support for Israel by participating in the BIG Day effort by purchasing Israeli products on Wednesday, March 30.

 

For more than 60 years, NCJW has been committed to ensuring the survival and security of the State of Israel and has been actively involved in contributing to her future by sponsoring programs that foster and support education, promoting the empowerment of women, and bridging the gaps in society for Israel's vulnerable women, children, and families. In recent years, a dangerous and very serious delegitimization campaign has been waged against Israel. Supporting efforts like BIG Day is just one of the many ways NCJW is standing for the establishment of a just and permanent peace for Israel and helping to create a vibrant future for the women, children and families who live there.

China Is Building The Biggest Resort Ever In The Caribbean

China is getting ready to open the biggest resort the Caribbean has ever seen: The 1,000 acre Baha Mar.

The Bahama mega resort, which is funded by the Export-Import Bank of China, is scheduled to open in late 2014. It will be built by the China State Construction Engineering Corp at a cost of $3.4 billion, according to CNN.

Baha Mar will feature a 100,000-square-foot casino, a retail strip, a Jack Nicklaus Signature championship 18-hole golf course, a water park, three spas and several hotels.

Jewish American Reportedly To Be Charged By Cuban Prosecutors For Espionage

Prosecutors in Cuba are reportedly seeking a 20-year prison sentence for the Jewish American Alan Gross, a US government contractor that the State Department says was assisting Cuban Jews. Gross is accused of "Acts Against the Independence and Territorial Integrity of the State," the ‘Reuters’ news agency says, citing Cuban state media. The espionage charge carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence. Gross could have faced the death penalty, ‘Reuters’ reported, adding that a trial date would be set soon and that US diplomats had been informed of the charges.

Gross was detained in December 2009. His wife Judy (pictured with him above) and State Department officials in Washington say he was in the country on a US Agency for International Development contract to help the country's Jewish community of about 1,500 to communicate with other Jewish communities through the internet. The main Jewish groups in Cuba have denied any contact with, or knowledge of Gross or the program. Cuban law prohibits bringing satellite phone equipment into the country without a permit. Gross reportedly is being held in a military hospital; he is suffering from health problems and is reported to have lost 90 pounds.
